If you are compelled to run a marathon, why not do it alongside one of the world's most spectacular natural icons – the Great Barrier Reef. Staged in Port Douglas, Australian marathon legend Steve Moneghetti has dubbed this race the “world's best”. Taking in all the delights of Tropical North Queensland, participants can run 74km JCU Ultra Marathon; 42km adventure marathon; or 21km half marathon set along the fantastic fringing reefs and ancient rainforest for which this region is renowned. There's also a 10km, 5km, and 2.5km junior challenge. All races start at stunning Four Mile Beach. After all, life is a marathon, not a sprint.

BRISBANE ASIA PACIFIC FILM FESTIVAL

The cacophony of colours and culture of Asia Pacific are captured in this festival, which features 75 films from more than 30 countries in the region. During 11 days in November, this collective of individual entities, unique cultures, lifestyles, aesthetic traditions, faith systems, climates and ideologies will be showcased on film. The best cinematic works from the Asia Pacific have been selected for this event and will reveal vast landscapes, turmoils and hardship, the weird and wonderful, and the gentle and sensitive. 2015 is being hailed as stellar year for Asia Pacific cinema, with leading film makers appearing in the world's most prominent film festivals and award competitions.

WOODFORD FOLK FESTIVAL

This annual celebration, held over six days and six nights from December 27 to January 1 involves more than 2000 performers in 1536 shows. The packed program includes concerts, dances, street theatre, writers' panels, film festival, comedy sessions, acoustic jams, social dialogue and debate, folk medicine, a children's festival, an environmental program, art and craft workshops, circus performances, late-night cabarets, parades and special events including a spectacular fire event. Set on 200ha of land behind the tiny township of Woodford on the Sunshine Coast, the village of “Woodfordia” is home to 35 performance venues with festival streets lined with restaurants, cafes, stalls, bars, street theatre and parades. The eco-friendly site is also home to tree-filled campgrounds, butterfly walks, ponds and wildlife. Now in its 29th year, the Woodford Folk Festival attracts acclaimed national and international acts who draw in crowds of more than 130,000 over the course of the event. For six blissful days and nights you can tap into your inner hippie or listen to some mainstream music, at one of the most delightful destinations on the planet.
