Grand Hyatt Melbourne Celebrates 30 Years of Excellence

Grand Hyatt Melbourne celebrates 30 years of excellence in service and care. First opening it's doors as Hyatt on Collins in 1986, the hotel was designed with a vision by it's developers to create 'the best hotel in the world'.

From it's inception 30 years ago, Grand Hyatt Melbourne has been a true Melbourne icon. Located at the Paris end of Collins Street in Melbourne's CBD, the striking hotel is distinctive in form, colour and reputation. The stunning gold facade highlights the city skyline with its stunning window structures, especially designed with 12kgs of 24 carat gold injected into the glass.

The hotel continues to be recognised for its excellence, this year winning a number of prestigious awards including 'Australia's Leading Business Hotel' and 'Australia's Leading Luxury Hotel and Conference Centre'.

General Manager Ilan Weill has a long history with the hotel, first joining as Duty Manager at the beginning of his career in 1989, before working in Hyatt Hotels across six countries and finally returning to the newly renovated Grand Hyatt Melbourne in 2011 as General Manager.

Ilan fondly remembers his first time with the hotel. “Hyatt on Collins created a new setting in hospitality, it was something like we have never seen before, it was incredible,” he says.

“Back in the 80s you drove into our spectacular driveway with huge marble columns greeting you. The lobby was always overpowered by an unbelievable floral arrangement, with plenty of the 80s bling, it was truly unbelievable.

“All those years ago, we were the first luxury hotel in the city. While over the years many more great hotels arrived, changing the dynamic of the industry in our city, we have continued to maintain our unique positioning and flavour. The luxury element of who we are as a hotel has not changed, it has simply kept up with time. It's more practical, more modern, and more technology ready.”

Just as important as the luxury and glamour, at the heart of the hotel is it's people. The hotel is proud to boast the longevity of many of its colleagues, with seven members of staff celebrating 30 years of service this year, some who started their journey with the hotel even before the official opening.

“I am so proud of our employees who come to work every day and make it their purpose and goal to care for each other and our guests,” says Ilan.

With the ongoing commitment and support of our owners, the hotel continues to evolve and develop, ensuring that the experience and facilities we offer our guests and employees continues to be relevant, making us a preferred hotel for many to stay and work.

From 1986 until the current day, the spirit of the hotel still shines brightly; a spirit that embodies sophistication, style and above all, genuine hospitality.

To celebrate 30 Years of Excellence, Grand Hyatt Melbourne is today launching a number of exclusive Anniversary offerings as a thank you to our loyal guests and employees.
